Duchess & Spirit

Dutchess and Spirit were rescued from a Camelot Auction in New Jersey. Dutchess (Bay) and Spirit (foal) were posted to the online kill lot page, pictured in the kill pen with a lead rope hanging from the mare’s face. Dutchess was untouched with her newly born foal glued to her side. Spirit was a month old when he was thrown into the pen. The only way to handle or catch Dutchess was to grab hold
of the lead rope.

After discovering their position of being unhandled and hard to manage, we knew our rescue was the only option for them to leave the lot alive. We approached them slowly, giving them time to trust our intentions. We then could catch them and load them both onto the trailer.

Upon arrival to their new sanctuary, Dutchess’ number was  scrubbed off, and Spirit was now at ease alongside his mother. They both started their healing journey, which included daily handling, grooming, and time in the pastures. The time spent reteaching Dutchess and teaching Spirit for the first time. They were taught the necessities of putting a halter on, brushing, picking hooves, and standing in the wash stall for a bath. Dutchess and Spirit were
learning simultaneously due to both being unmanaged from the start of their lives.

At the appropriate time, Sprit was weaned from his mother, and they both started their under-saddle training. A routine of lunging and riding was established to be able to send them away to a trainer. After finishing with the trainer, both horses were up for adoption due to reaching their goals. Spirit was placed with Sara OBrien, who now competes in shows and has won numerous championships. Dutchess was also placed in a show home.
