Halo's Haven Rescue in the News
Spartan is Safe. But What About the Others?
Spartan's story doesn't end with his rescue. It opens the door to a much bigger conversation about animal welfare in Maryland and the animals that are still waiting for their chance.

Some of you have followed Spartan's story closely, while others may be hearing about it for the very first time. Either way, what many do not realize is how much went into getting him out of the situation at Naylor Farm Horse Sanctuary and Rescue on Gravel Branch Road in Hurlock, Maryland, and safely to Halo's Haven Rescue. Spartan had been running loose near the Dorchester County property, which is how Michelle and the others were ultimately able to capture him.
Spartan was not simply loaded into a trailer and hauled away. It took a veterinarian, a tranquilizer gun, and a team of people willing to do whatever it took to give him a chance. There were a lot of moving parts, a lot of unknowns, and a lot of people working together to make sure he made it out safely. Thankfully, those efforts made it possible for Spartan to get the fresh start he deserves.
Today, Spartan is settling in and getting the opportunity to just be a horse. Watching him interact with Destiny has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience. Destiny was brought in from another farm to keep Spartan company while he adjusts to life here at Halo's Haven Rescue. Destiny's home farm is not far from the property where these animals are being severely neglected. At one point, over the winter, Spartan found refuge at Destiny's farm, where the two became familiar with one another. While Spartan has not yet been introduced to the rest of the herd at Halo's Haven Rescue, having a familiar companion has helped make his transition easier.
As happy as we are for Spartan, his rescue is only one part of a much larger story. While we celebrate the fact that he is finally safe, receiving the proper care, and getting the chance to heal, it is impossible not to think about the animals that are left behind. They are the reason this situation continues to weigh so heavily on our hearts. For every animal that makes it out, there are others still waiting for help, and that reality is what keeps us awake at night.
Since Spartan's rescue, we have received messages from people who have followed this situation for years. Some have shared photos, dates, records or reports made. Others simply have asked the same question many of us are asking:
How does something like this go on for so long?
This is a question much bigger than Spartan. It is a question about what happens when people report concerns, what resources are available when animals are in danger, and what changes need to be made so that help comes before a situation reaches a crisis point.
The goal has never been to save one horse and move on. The goal is to make sure the animals do not fall through the cracks in the first place.
We will continue to share updates, documents, and stories as they become available to us. We believe the public deserves to understand what happened, how it happened, and what can be done to prevent this from happening again. For now, we are grateful that Spartan is safe. We are grateful for everyone who helped make that possible. And we are grateful for the people who continue to speak up for animals that cannot speak for themselves.
